For 75 years Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv has been situated in the magnificent house of Arghir Kujumdzhioglu. It is not only the most spacious but also the most beautiful building from the Revival Period in Bulgarian lands. The house was built in 1847 and it is really unique with an inimitable triple arch shape, oriels protruding over the street and the fact that it is perched over a millenary Roman wall.
Built in the spirit of the new Revival architecture this house has four stores with floorage over 2000 square meters, and a museum exhibition including 14 rooms and two large halls. The stylish a la Franga niches, the colourful murals and wood-carved ceilings radiate a quaint charm. The “Royal house” as it was called by its contemporaries is a model of Baroque Art in Bulgaria. That is why it was declared a national monument of culture.
Regional ethnographic museum – Plovdiv was established in 1917. Today it stores over 50,000 movable cultural properties in its funds. The permanent exhibition displays Revival period traditional culture of the ethnic groups Thracians and Ruptsi.
Most prominent among the exhibits are the collections of shepherd woodcarving, copper utensils, jewelry and church utensils, antique edged and firearms, sewn and knitted lace, traditional costumes from all the Bulgarian ethnic territory, colourful rugs and carpets, traditional and modern musical instruments, urban interior – furniture, gas lamps, old clocks and many more.
Magnificent architecture and a rich ethnographic collection are entwined with the beautiful museum courtyard’s fragrance of roses, geranium and evergreen boxwoods. This is a wonderful place for musical and poetic performances, concerts, book premieres, exhibitions, craft workshops, art biennials, photo sessions etc.
In Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv past and present meet to charge our future with the power of the living tradition.
